When you press the brake pedal, pressurized brake fluid moves the caliper piston, pressing the brake pads against the rotor to slow the vehicle. Brake pads wear down over time, with wear varying based on driving conditions. Issues like seized caliper components or dust buildup can cause accelerated wear or squealing. Regular inspections and replacing worn pads are vital for safe braking. Applying grease to the non-friction surfaces helps reduce noise and ensure smooth operation.

The braking system relies on the precise movement of brake calipers, pads, and rotors to safely slow and stop the vehicle. When the brake pedal is pressed, pressurized brake fluid forces the piston inside the caliper to push the brake pads against the rotor. Brake pads are made of friction material that wears down over time, with wear rates influenced by driving conditions and brake system design. Accelerated pad wear can result from seized caliper slider bolts, pistons, or dust buildup within the caliper. Brake pad squeal can occur due to embedded debris, lack of lubrication, or when the pads are fully worn. Many vehicles have pad wear sensors that alert the driver when replacement is necessary. Replacing worn pads and applying brake grease or anti-seize compound during maintenance helps minimize squeal and ensures effective braking performance.
