On newer vehicles, the ignition coil is located directly above the spark plugs. The ignition coil converts 12 volts to thousands of volts in order to ignite the spark plugs. Ignition coils are made up primarily of a primary and secondary winding and an center iron core.

Ignition coils increase the battery’s 12 volts to about 20,000 volts to ignite the fuel in each cylinder. Newer vehicles use individual coils for each spark plug, while older ones had a single coil and distributor. Coils can fail due to constant heat, vibration, or worn spark plugs that increase the electrical load. Symptoms of failure include engine misfires, rough running, and a flashing check engine light, potentially damaging the catalytic converter. Faulty coils should be replaced, and spark plugs checked to ensure optimal ignition system performance and avoid engine issues.
