All vehicles have a warning light to remind the driver to fasten their seatbelt. The sensor that detects when the seatbelt is fastened is normally located inside the seatbelt buckle latch mechanism. Some vehicles use the seatbelt fastened switch to control which airbags are deployed in an accident, and may also be used to determine the force of the airbag deployment. When the contacts on the latch switch fail, the seatbelt reminder light may flicker intermittently.
The contacts inside the latch are usually made up of a copper strip on a small printed circuit board. When the buckle is inserted, a contact slides across the strip to activate the light. In this animation, we show a system where the circuit is normally closed when the buckle is not inserted, with the closed circuit providing power to the light. Inserting the buckle opens the circuit, and therefore turns the light off. Some latches contain two switches - one which operates the light, and the other that sends a signal to the airbag module as to whether the seatbelt is being used.
