The spark plug ignites the fuel/air mix in the engine. A healthy spark plug has a grayish-brown electrode and a square edge. Worn plugs show a rounded electrode and a larger gap. Lean mixture plugs have white deposits, while rich mixture plugs are black and sooty. Oil leaks make the plug oily, indicating serious issues. Ash fouling from oil or additives creates ash deposits. Pre-ignition causes blistering and melting, while carbon tracking leaves black lines on the porcelain, indicating electrical issues.
The spark plug's role is to ignite the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber, making it a key indicator of engine health. A healthy spark plug features a grayish-brown electrode with a square edge. A worn spark plug shows a rounded electrode, indicating a larger gap between it and the ground strap. A lean mixture results in white deposits on the electrode and ground strap, while a rich mixture causes black, sooty deposits. Oil leaks create an oily plug, suggesting significant engine issues. Ash fouling, from oil or fuel additives, leaves ash deposits. Pre-ignition leads to blistering of the ceramic insulator and melting of components. Carbon tracking, seen as black lines on the porcelain, results from high voltage traveling across the insulator due to moisture or contaminants, necessitating replacement of both the spark plug and potentially the coil boot.
