The rear differential is composed of the rear differential carrier, a ring gear, side gears, planet gears, a pinion gear, a pinion shaft, and axle shafts. All of these parts are housed in a metal case so that it can be filled with fluid.
The rear differential channels the power that comes from the engine and through the transmission out to each of the rear wheels. The gears inside the differential are designed to allow one wheel to turn at a different speed from the other, which is necessary for cornering. Differentials contain oil that lubricates the gears. The oil should be replaced at manufacturer-recommended intervals, and any leaks should be repaired to prevent internal damage.
